I think soufa sodium polyborate is effective as a flame retardant for cellulose.
Phosphoric acid-based flame retardants are often used in paper and wood, but problems have been pointed out, such as yellowing and loss of firmness.
Therefore, it can be said that sodium polyborate, a boron-based flame retardant newly introduced in the flame retardant market, has a high effect of imparting flame retardancy to cellulose.

Originally developed as a flame retardant for wood, it is now shipping to various places with potential for other cellulosic materials.
Now other uses are shipping more than their original uses.

Therefore, it can be applied to, for example, cardboard, paper, and Japanese paper. Works well on pulp-based materials.

So, in soufa, we sprayed soufa on the tissue that you use every day in paper and dried it and ignited it with a lighter.

Non-burnable tissue * Does not spread as charcoal

I just sprayed soufa on a normal tissue and dried it. The tissue itself was slightly stiff, but did not ignite.
The spraying looks like this.

It is a boron-based flame retardant that works very effectively on cellulosic materials.
We believe that we can handle cases where wood flour is mixed in the resin deck. In recent years, we are expecting to provide flame retardancy to CNF (cellulose nanofiber).

Application to wood flour is being verified by several manufacturers.
Simple tests have shown good results.

The post Sodium polyborate as flame retardant for cellulose first appeared on SOUFA INC.Boric acid flameretardant& Termiticide.

Inquiries for paper-related projects have been increasing.
Until now, phosphorus-based flame retardants have been used, but the flame retardant performance is not enough, so another flame retardant is being considered.

One paper maker talked about the lack of flame retardancy with a phosphorus-based flame retardant and the fact that the paper turned yellow and stiffened. soufa solved those problems.

Since our company is specialized in flame retardant wood, we have not verified the details of paper.
However, a simple combustion test has been conducted and it has been confirmed that it is effective for paper.

Below is a 16% soufa aqueous solution applied to Japanese paper and dried.

Until now, phosphorus and aluminum hydroxide have been widely used as flame retardants for paper.
We believe that soufa can be used as a paper flame retardant.

Although the amount of shipment is still small, some products are used in special paper.
Sodium polyborate is a highly effective flame retardant for cellulose, the main constituent of wood. Therefore, it has a high effect on paper and pulp.
The difficulty is that it has a slight hardening effect on the pulp, so you may need to consider adjusting the water content or using a softener in combination. Either way, it is still in use at the development stage, so we expect future use.

soufa is working on the development of non-combustible wood. We have been conducting research and development with partner companies and succeeded in producing wood with the certification level of noncombustible materials. Unlike other companies’ non-combustible wood, there is no stickiness due to efflorescence or leaching.
